Attire: Most students wear leotards and skirts, any color, with ballet shoes for ballet and tap shoes for tap. Boys wear sweats or leggings and T-shirts. If you would like to attend the class first before purchasing the “gear” that is fine—in this case, students may wear socks for ballet and a hard-soled shoe (such as a Mary Jane) for tap, and any comfortable clothing is fine if one does not have a leotard. Suggested places to purchase the needed attire are: AllAboutDance.com, Target, Payless, Karabel Dance in Burbank, Capezio Dance in Hollywood. We also have a shoe recycling system in the studio. In other words, students put their outgrown shoes in the box and take out any shoes that might fit them for no charge at all.
Pre-School Dance – ages 2-4. This class is for ages 2-4 focuses on an introduction to Ballet and Tap Dance, and also incorporates some Jazz and Creative Movement. Pre-Schoolers get a chance to move to music, tell stories through Dance and Creative Movement, use props, and learn the basics of Tap and Ballet form, music, and steps. Though we work on routines and perform two recitals per year, the emphasis is on exposure to the spirit of dance and awakening each child’s creativity and imagination through music and movement, rather than on executing steps perfectly. Developmentally, Pre-School is a great time to introduce children to the art of Dance, and as their muscles strengthen through movement, their minds and imaginations do too. Each class session begins with a Welcome Song, seated around the Magic Carpet. Then we do a Creative Movement Warmup, moving about the room and responding to different musical sounds. Next we move into a time of ballet technique, steps, and learning part of an ongoing routine. Still wearing ballet shoes or sometimes already in tap shoes, Aimee often leads a story-telling event using rhythm and chant. Finally, the children are asked to put on their tap shoes for a short tap technique lesson and final bows and curties using colored scarves.
Children’s Dance – ages 5-8 This class is for ages 5-8 focuses on an introduction to Ballet and Tap Dance, and also incorporates some Jazz, Character, and Traditional Dance. Children get a chance to learn a basic Ballet Barre, be exposed to Ballet and Tap technique, use props, and learn both a Tap and a Ballet routine. Recitals are bi-annual, and the emphasis is on exposure to the spirit of dance, fun, exercise, flexibility, and awakening each child’s creativity and imagination through music and movement, rather than on creating the perfect show. Developmentally, this is a great time to introduce children to the art of Dance, and as their muscles strengthen through movement, their minds and imaginations do too. Each class session begins with a Ballet Barre. Next we move into a time of stretching in the center of the floor, ballet foot and arm positions and poses, jumps in the center, turns and leaps across the floor, and ballet technique, steps, and learning part of an ongoing routine. Finally, the children are asked to put on their tap shoes for a short tap technique lesson and learning an ongoing taproutine. The class ends with final bows and curties using colored scarves.
Ballet and More – ages 8 and up
This class allow the older dancers to have some input into their own choreography and content, incorporating Ballet, Tap, Lyrical, Modern, Contemporary, Jazz, Hiphop and Motown.  Whether dancers have gone through Ms. Aimee’s classes before or  not, older students will have a chance to work on some technique with a strong, challenging Ballet Barre, Stretches in the Center, Leaps and Turns across the floor, and both a Classical and a Contemporary Movement piece.  Students give feedback on music choices and even choreograph 8 count sequences using specific movement vocabulary drawn from Ballet, Lyrical, Modern, Contemporary, Jazz, or Motown.  Then, dancers move into Tap technique, and build a dance using Tap vocabulary and choreography which challenges them at their level.  Dancers perform in recitals and local events such as Fall Festival at Our Mother of Good Counsel, Los Feliz Street Fair, and Studio A recitals.  Dancers get to choose their own characters, costumes, and stories.  Fun for all, team building and self-esteem are encouraged, and strong technique is enhanced to add to their dance foundation for future dance education.  Join us!
Special Helpers, Studio Setting, Family Involvement, Imagery
Special Helpers:
All of Ms. Aimee’s Children’s Dance and Preschool Dance classes feature an “Assistant Teacher,” a teenage student who has gone through Ms. Aimee’s classes before and who offers a unique perspective and a helping hand to the young dancers.  The little ones always relate to Ms. Louisa, Ms. Natalie, Ms. Alyssa, and the other teen helpers.  They can tell that they’re not really kids, but they’re not really grown-ups either, and they sure can dance!  Just one more thing that makes these dance classes so special for all!
Studio Setting:
Studio A has a very special Silverlake vibe, with open-feel skylit room hidden by the street by a garden path, and twinkly lights in the evening, adding to the gentle, artsy ambiance.
Family Involvement:
Parents and grandparents, caregivers, friends and visiting family members are all invited to watch the class, or not.  Chairs are set up, but there is an invisible “fourth wall” set up by Aimee and her teachers, so that students do not feel that they are “on stage,” with an audience, yet, families can see exactly what is occurring in class.  Or, for some families, parents go into the breezeway and rest, read, listen, or even run to Trader Joe’s or take the adult dance classes in the large studio next door!  For the 10:50 am class, many families join their little dancer on the parachute for the hello song and even do the warmup dances with their child until s/he is comfortable, then fade into the background gently over time.  It’s a beautiful system where children feel supported, and families are welcome in the process.
Imagery:
Ms. Aimee uses child-centered imagery to describe the movement in her classes. “Your heels are together like best friends in First Position,” “Open your arms like the sunset,” “We’re not like owls or penguins that can turn their heads around in a complete circle. We are human beings. We have to look, turn our heads as far as we can, and then whip our heads around to ‘spot,’ look at your special person so you don’t get dizzy…” Ms. Aimee also offers “2 stars and a wish” — 2 things the child is doing well and one thing s/he could do to improve. This couches skill-building in a positive light but still challenges children to grow and stretch. Children never forget these visuals as they build their dance foundation!
